[origin: WO2011051630A1] The invention relates to a method for processing documents (90, 92) relating to shipped items, in which automated means (10, 12) perform the following steps: recognising characters in at least one document (90, 92) provided by an item carrier; obtaining at least one item reference (96) made up of characters; obtaining at least one string (98, 102) of characters associated with the reference and separate from the latter; calculating the respective correspondence rates between the string (98, 102) and models (104) in a database; determining whether at least one of the rates fulfils at least one predetermined condition; and, when the condition is fulfilled, associating the item reference (96) with a model (104) from the database relating to said rate and performing an action involving the item reference by means of the associated model.
