The gas cooking appliance has a cooking plate (109a) with a gas burner (127a) and a switching unit is arranged in a cooking plate. A switching unit has a switch and an elongate pushing rod (135) for switching operation. The pushing rod is arranged in an area of the gas burner of the cooking plate and has a pushing rod lower side and pushing rod upper side. The pushing rod is moved by placing a cooking vessel (147) on the cooking plate around a moving magnitude (Hmech) along an actuating path. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a gas cooking appliance.

Bei einem Gaskochgerät (100) mit Gaskochstelle (109a) mit Gasbrenner (127a) und zugeordneter Schalteinrichtung weist diese einen Schalter (114a) und einen länglichen Stößel (135) zur Schalterbetätigung auf, der an der zugehörigen Gaskochstelle (109a) angeordnet und in Längsrichtung bewegbar ist. Die Stößel-Unterseite ist entlang eines Betätigungsweges bewegbar durch Bewegen des gesamten Stößels (135) und durch Verändern der Stößellänge. Durch Aufstellen eines Kochgefäßes (147) wird er um einen ersten Bewegungsbetrag (H mech ) entlang des Betätigungsweges bewegt, und durch Erwärmung mit Längenzunahme um einen zweiten Bewegungsbetrag (H thermisch ). Die Stößel-Unterseite betätigt den Schalter (114a), wenn sie um den ersten Bewegungsbetrag (H mech ) und den zweiten Bewegungsbetrag (H thermisch ) gemeinsam bewegt worden ist.
