[origin: WO2011083014A2] The invention relates to a device (10) for handling banknotes, comprising at least one cash box (14a to 14d) for receiving banknotes and at least one singulating and/or stacking module (16a to 16d) for removing banknotes and/or for feeding banknotes to the cash box (14a to 14d). The singulating and/or stacking module (16a to 16d) and the cash box (14a to 14d) are disposed separately from each other. The cash box (14a to 14d) comprises a retraction element (34) disposed in a tilted position such that banknotes can be fed to and/or removed from the cash box (14a to 14d) through an opening (36) of the cash box (14a to 14d) by means of the singulating and/or stacking module (16a to 16d). In a retaining position, the retraction element (34) is disposed such that no banknotes can be fed into or removed from the cash box (14a to 14d). The cash box (14a to 14d) comprises an elastic element (58) retaining the retraction element (34) in the tilted position.
