[origin: WO2011083267A1] The invention relates to a railway unit (2) suitable for pulling a freight train, characterised in that said unit includes a base module (6) including wheels, and complementary modules (31-35) preferably mounted in a removable manner on said base module (6), said complementary modules including at least one nominal-power module (33), having optimised efficiency, and one extra-power module (35). The extra-power module is suitable in particular for supplying complementary power under specific conditions, in particular when starting the train or on steep slopes. The nominal-power module is optimised for regular operating conditions.
