[origin: EP2527520A1] The invention relates to a method of operating an articles treatment apparatus (2) comprising a heat pump system (4), the heat pump system having a refrigerant loop (6) comprising: a first heat exchanger (10) for heating a refrigerant, a second heat exchanger (12) for cooling the refrigerant, a refrigerant expansion device (16) arranged in the refrigerant loop (6) between the second heat exchanger (12) and the first heat exchanger (10), and a compressor (14) arranged between the first heat exchanger (10) and the second heat exchanger (12). According to the invention the method comprises: detecting a refrigerant condition in the refrigerant loop (6), and modifying the operation mode of the heat pump system (4) in dependency of the detected refrigerant condition in the refrigerant loop (6), wherein the modification of the operation mode of the heat pump system (4) is directed to reduce the refrigerant pressure in at least a part of the high pressure side of the refrigerant loop (6), and/or wherein the refrigerant condition at which the operation mode of the heat pump system (4) is modified indicates an abnormal state or approaching an abnormal state, wherein the abnormal state is in particular a refrigerant overpressure state in the refrigerant loop (6).
