[origin: EP2527747A1] The device has a cookware detecting unit (18) for detecting a change in the orientation or position of a cooking vessel, particularly pot (14) or pan (16), on a cooking area of a hob (10). A control device (20) is designed for controlling a parameter of the cooking area according to the detected orientation- or position change of the cooking vessel on the hob. An absolute orientation, absolute position or size of the cooking vessel is detected by the cookware detecting unit. A direction for changing the orientation or position of the cooking vessel on the hob is displayed by a display device. An independent claim is provided for a method for operating a hob with a cooking area.
