For a handrail (4), the housing (2) has an entry side (5) and an exit side (6) which lies opposite the entry side (5). The at least three radiation sources (3) in the housing (2) are arranged between the entry side (5) and the exit side (6) in such a way that they can irradiate the handrail (4) from at least two directions which are substantially orthogonal with respect to one another. During operation of an escalator, the handrail (4) can be freed permanently of germs by the handrail disinfection device (1) according to the invention, with the result that the propagation of diseases is reduced.
