[origin: WO2011131744A1] The invention relates to a handrail disinfection device (1) having at least one housing (2) and at least three radiation sources (3) which emit electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength of from 220 nm to 280 nm, in particular from 240 nm to 250 nm. For a handrail (4), the housing (2) has an entry side (5) and an exit side (6) which lies opposite the entry side (5). The at least three radiation sources (3) in the housing (2) are arranged between the entry side (5) and the exit side (6) in such a way that they can irradiate the handrail (4) from at least two directions which are substantially orthogonal with respect to one another. During operation of an escalator, the handrail (4) can be freed permanently of germs by the handrail disinfection device (1) according to the invention, with the result that the propagation of diseases is reduced.
