[origin: WO2012041297A1] The invention relates to a shelf (3) of an item of furniture (1), the shelf (3) comprising a translucent material, an upper and lower flat side (12) and a circumferential narrow side (11), and so-called edge lighting being provided, which has at least one luminous element (8) arranged in a channel (5), wherein said luminous element is arranged to radiate light into the narrow side (11). According to the invention, the channel (5) is arranged adjacent to a flat side (12) and reflective surfaces are provided within the channel (5), wherein said surfaces deflect the light originating from the luminous element (8) to a reflective surface, referred to as the radiation surface (10), and which is arranged beside the narrow side (11) of the shelf (3) and deflects the light into the narrow side (11).
