[origin: WO2011141651A1] The invention relates to a method for optimizing a mail-processing procedure, said method comprising the following steps: subjecting items to a first sorting cycle through which first sorting outlets (S1 - S78) are assigned to first delivery destinations (A1 - Z3) that have a high filling rate, another sorting outlet (S79) being assigned to second delivery destinations (A'1 - Z'3) that have a low filling rate; directing separation inserts (5) to the first sorting outlets; recirculating the items from the other sorting outlet; and subjecting said items to a second sorting outlet through which the first sorting outlets are assigned to the second delivery destinations. If the sorting outlets use storage trays (4) at the end of the second sorting cycle, the items for a first and second destination are sorted, in strata, in a single tray and separated by an insert.
