Abstract (en)

[origin: WO2011073763A1] The present invention relates to a method and device (10) for treating waste that poses an infection hazard, in particular hospital waste, comprising at least one grinding area (A) arranged such as to transform the waste to be treated (1) into unrecognisable ground material (2), followed by a decontamination area (B) for sterilising said ground material, and a discharge area (C) for the decontaminated, unrecognisable ground material (3) for the purpose of disposing of the latter as household waste. Said device (10) is characterised in that the decontamination area (B) comprises at least one decontamination compartment (30) provided with an inlet opening and an outlet opening, hermetically sealed respectively by an inlet gate (31) and an outlet gate (32), at least one nozzle for injecting steam (24) to sterilise the unrecognisable ground material (2) at a predetermined temperature, under a predetermined pressure and for a predetermined duration, and a forward movement means (35) arranged such as to move the unrecognisable ground material (2) during the loading phase in one direction, from the inlet opening to the outlet opening and, during the decontamination phase, alternating between one direction and the other, for the purpose of mixing, stirring and separating said unrecognisable ground material (2) in order to decontaminate the latter fully.
