[origin: WO2012001030A1] The invention relates to a steam iron, comprising a housing (1), within which a water container (12) and on which an opening (13) for filling the water container (12) with water are provided; a base plate (21), which is arranged in the lower part of the housing (1) for ironing; and a cover body (3) for closing the opening (13) of the housing, said cover element having a closed and an open position; and a prestress device which interacts with the cover body (3) such that the cover body (3) can move automatically to the closed or open position. Under the action of the prestress device, during use the cover body (3) can move automatically to the open or closed position in a user-friendly manner. Moreover, the prestress device reliably holds the cover element (3) in the open or closed position, which contributes to further stabilization of the iron during use thereof.
