[origin: WO2012025130A1] The invention relates to a device (10) for treating tobacco, in particular cut tobacco, comprising a rotatable drum element (12). The drum element (12) has an introduction side (11) having an introduction opening for introducing tobacco into the interior of the drum element and a discharge side (13) having a discharge opening for discharging tobacco from the interior of the drum element. In particular in the conveying direction of the tobacco in the interior of the drum, a loosening zone is formed between the introduction opening and a treatment zone. Preferably compacted tobacco material is loosened in the loosening zone, and the loosened tobacco can be treated in a subsequent treatment zone in the conveying direction. In particular in the loosening zone, a means for introducing steam is provided. An embodiment of the device is characterized in that recirculated air return lines (22, 24) arranged outside the drum element (12), preferably in parallel, are provided between the discharge side (13) and the introduction side (11) of the drum element (12). In particular a first recirculated air return line (22) is or can be operated as a production recirculated air return line during production operation of the device (10), and in particular the second recirculated air return line (24) is or can be operated during non-production operation of the device (10), preferably in or during a preheating phase of the device (10).
