[origin: WO2012041599A2] A starter for an internal combustion engine has a starter pinion which is arranged adjustably on a shaft and can be adjusted axially between a retracted disengagement position and an advanced engagement position with a crown gear of the internal combustion engine. The advancing movement of the starter pinion is limited by a stop device which comprises a retaining part, a deformation part and a stop part, wherein the stop part comprises a circumferential supporting section which is arranged adjacent to the surface area of the retaining part, and wherein the deformation element is supported on the front side, which faces the stop part, of the retaining part.
