[origin: WO2012045522A1] The invention relates to a method for operating a hybrid drive unit (12), the hybrid drive unit (12) comprising an internal combustion engine-generator unit (6) as a range extender, at least one electrical machine (3) for driving and braking the hybrid vehicle, and a battery (4), comprising the steps of: generating mechanical energy in an internal combustion engine of the internal combustion engine-generator unit (6), converting the mechanical energy into electrical energy in a generator (8) of the internal combustion engine-generator unit (6), charging the battery (4) with electrical energy from the generator and/or charging the battery (4) with electrical energy from the electrical machine (3) in recuperation mode, wherein the electrical power provided by the generator of the internal combustion engine-generator unit (6) and/or the electrical power provided by the at least one electrical machine (3) in recuperation mode is controlled and/or regulated for charging the battery (4) such that the electrical charging power of the battery (4) is below a predefined threshold value during the operation of the at least one electrical machine (3) for braking the hybrid vehicle and for charging the battery (4) with electrical energy from the at least one electrical machine (3) in recuperation mode.
