In order to develop the method so as to reduce the risk of the user accidentally using an unsuitable cleaning element, it is proposed according to the invention to store, in the memory element, data which is characteristic of the type of cleaning element and which is read out, and evaluated, over the time period starting from when the cleaning appliance is started up until the beginning of the cleaning action of the cleaning element. Also proposed is a cleaning appliance for implementing the method.
