The method involves a direct current (DC) motor (2) comprising a commutator with a number of sliding contacts (33). A rivet setting device (5) for setting rivets, is driven by the DC motor, where power consumption of the DC motor is controlled by pulse width modulation. The power consumption is actuated in such a manner for acceleration of the rivet setting device and/or for deceleration of the rivet setting device by the pulse width modulation such that the power consumption continuously increases during start-up phases for setting up the maximum acceleration power and/or brake performance. An independent claim is also included for a rivet setting apparatus.

Verfahren zum Betreiben eines Nietsetzgerätes (1), umfassend einen Gleichstrommotor (2), der einen Kommutator mit einer Anzahl von Schleifkontakten aufweist, eine Nietsetzeinrichtung (5) zum Setzen von Nieten, welches durch den Gleichstrommotor (2) angetrieben wird, wobei die Leistungsaufnahme des Gleichstrommotors (2) mittels Pulsweitenmodulation gesteuert wird, wobei die Leistungsaufnahme zur Beschleunigung der Nietsetzeinrichtung (5) und/oder zur Abbremsung der Nietsetzeinrichtung (5) derart mittels der Pulsweitenmodulation angesteuert wird, dass die Leistungsaufnahme während einer Anlaufphase (A, B) zum Aufbau der maximalen Beschleunigungsleistung bzw. Bremsleistung kontinuierlich zunimmt.
