[origin: WO2012098405A1] The present invention relates to methods for preparing porous carbon material, and in particular to methods designed to produce porous carbon which exhibits selectivity for low molecular weight aldehydes, such as formaldehyde, and for hydrogen cyanide. The method comprises preparing the porous carbon in the presence of a nitrogen-donating agent. The invention also relates to filter elements and smoking articles comprising the porous carbon.
