Abstract (en)

[origin: WO2012097395A1] The invention relates to the use of protein-containing compositions for producing flame-retardant coatings or articles, the compositions comprising as flame retardant a combination of a) one or more proteins from an animal and/or plant source and b) one or more bases, selected from alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydroxides, hydrogencarbonates and carbonates, and optionally c) one or more fillers and/or additives; and the compositions are prepared by dissolving or dispersing components a) to c), where present, in water or in an aqueous solvent system and mixing them, and the flame-retardant coating or flame-retardant article is subsequently produced by crosslinking of the protein component by the base or bases and drying to solidify and cure the compositions. The invention additionally relates to flame-retardant coatings and articles produced from the compositions.
