[origin: EP2676770A1] The device (10) has a drive unit (12) for driving a workpiece (14) about an axis of rotation (16), guiding units (22) operative in radial directions with respect to the axis of rotation, and a tool operative in a radial direction. A pressing unit (40) is provided with a press roll (46) for pressing the workpiece (20) against a drive element (36) of the drive unit. The workpiece is arranged between the drive element and the press roll. A detection unit (52) is provided for detecting the movement of the press roll. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a device for fine finishing or superfinishing of a rotationally symmetrical workpiece surface of a workpiece.
