[origin: EP2682674A2] The method involves influencing an average heat output of a combustion unit (10) in cyclic intervals such that breaks are switched between heating phases in which the combustion unit is placed at an approximately nominal output upto an operating temperature. A duration of the breaks is fixedly, manually and/or automatically adjusted based on a difference between an actual-room temperature and a reference-room temperature. An optical detector (7) is provided with a control. An alarm is produced by the detector during impending fuel shortage. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a manually loaded combustion unit (2) a flame detector.
