A method for controlling the speed of a rotating drum of a horizontal axis washing machine comprises a step for assessing the weight of the laundry load and a further step to determine, for the assessed load weight, a drum speed which maximizes the mechanical action to the laundry and/or a drum speed which corresponds to the highest efficiency of the motor.
