[origin: WO2012146491A1] The invention relates to a method for monitoring the hot box in a rail vehicle, wherein in a first step at least one temperature signal is determined, which is representative of a current temperature of a component (103.2) of a unit (103.1) of the rail vehicle (101), in particular a wheel bearing unit (103.2) of the rail vehicle (101), in a second step the at least one temperature signal is compared to at least one temperature limit signal, which is representative of a temperature limit relevant for a safe operation of the unit (10.31), and a component status signal is generated depending on the result of the comparison. In the second step, a temperature limit signal that is dependent on a current speed of the rail vehicle (101) is used as the at least one temperature limit signal.
