[origin: EP2708158A1] The present invention relates to a backrest mechanism for a chair. According to an embodiment, the backrest mechanism for a chair includes a pair of left and right side rods (13), each having a folded portion (13a) in a laid-V shape in a side view at a portion for supporting a sitting person around his or her lumbar, and a back plate (14) that connects opposing surfaces of the side rods. An upper portion of the back plate (14) above the folded portions (13a) serves as a flexible portion (14a) that is elastically deformable in a backward direction and that has smaller rigidity than the left and right side rods (13), and a lower portion of the back plate (14) below the flexible portion (14a) serves as an inflexible portion (14b) that has greater rigidity than the flexible portion (14a).
