[origin: WO2012171677A1] The invention relates to a device (102) for triggering a vehicle occupant protection means of a vehicle (100). The device has a surroundings sensor (112) for monitoring the surroundings (120) of the vehicle wherein the surroundings sensor is designed to output a surroundings signal in response to an imminent collision of the vehicle. The device also has a triggering device (114) which is designed to sense, within a peripheral area of the vehicle, a physical variable which indicates a collision which has taken place, and to generate a collision signal on the basis of the physical variable, and which is designed to make a triggering decision for the vehicle occupant protection means as a function of the surroundings signal and the collision signal.
