Said method comprises the step of applying a covering ink layer (14) containing multilayer pigments (60) to a substrate, and the step of introducing a mark (18) in the form of patterns, characters, or a code into the ink layer (14) using laser radiation, the quality of the multilayer pigments (60) and the intensity of the laser radiation being selected such that the mark (18) is brighter than the background zone (16) in the visible spectral range and can thus be visually (20) detected while being more absorbent than the background zone (16) in the infrared spectral range and thus being detectable by machine (22).
