[origin: WO2013045279A1] The invention relates to a sorting installation and a sorting method for jointly sorting two kinds of articles, particularly for two kinds of flat mail items. For each article to be sorted, the value that a prescribed sorting feature assumes for this article is measured. The article is transported by a first transport device (TE.1) to a separating filter (W.1). An article of the first article kind is redirected in a first outward-transfer device (Aus.1). On the basis of the ascertained sorting feature value, one sorting output from a first set (SM.1) of sorting outputs is selected if the sorting feature value has been ascertained in timely fashion. The article is transferred outward to the selected sorting output from the first sorting output set (SM.1). An article of the second article kind is redirected to a second transport device (TE.2) and transported by the latter to a second outward-transfer device (Aus.2). On the basis of the ascertained sorting feature value, one sorting output from a second set (SM.2) of sorting outputs is selected if the sorting feature value has been ascertained in timely fashion. The article is transferred outward to the selected sorting output from the second sorting output set (SM.2).
