[origin: WO2013020697A1] An apparatus (1) for handling value documents, particularly banknotes, comprises a plurality of handling zones which each have at least one cover (6) for covering an interior of the handling zone in question. Interior lighting (17) is provided and at least one region (16) of the cover (6) or adjacent to the cover (6) is semitransparent. As a result, the interior can be viewed through the semitransparent region (16) only when the interior lighting (17) is switched on. If an error is detected during the banknote handling, interior lighting (17) in the relevant handling zone automatically lights and thus takes the operator directly to the location of the problem.
