[origin: WO2013034526A1] An apparatus is disclosed that can be mounted on an existing winder or drawing bench that filters out defects in metal wires such as steel wires. The apparatus comprises a torque generating coupling in the mechanical force path between a first (206) and second (212) capstan. During use the outer circumferential speed of said second capstan (212) is larger than the outer circumferential speed of said first capstan (206). The torque generating coupling can be situated between the first (or second) axis and the capstan associated with said first (or second capstan), between the first and second capstan, or between the axes of the respective first and second capstans. By using an adjustable magnetic coupling the test force applied on the wire when guided from the first to the second capstan can be adjusted at will. The apparatus can also be implemented as a stand-alone unit that can easily be mounted on a winder or drawing bench. The apparatus can be driven by the wire being pulled from the second capstan.
