In normal operation of the portable data carrier, access to the safety-critical area of the permanent memory of the portable data carrier is blocked. Access to the security-critical area of the permanent memory of the portable data carrier is unblocked for an external entity after successful verification of the access authorization or successful authentication of the external entity with respect to the portable data carrier, the at least two securely stored secrets on the portable data carrier entering into the checking of the access authorization or authentication of the external entity that is performed by the portable data carrier.
