In order to prevent slag from coming into contact with the metal strip leaving the molten bath by simple and inexpensive means in the case of such a process, and thus ensure optimum quality of the surface, to drive the slag (S) away from the metal strip (M), the invention proposes directing a stream of gas (G1, G2) that extends over the width (B) of the metal strip (M) onto the surface (6) of the molten bath (3) by means of at least one nozzle (10, 11) arranged closely alongside the metal strip (M).
