[origin: GB2498736A] An apparatus for separating a hydrocarbon content from a material matrix which comprises the hydrocarbon content and water, the apparatus comprising a feeder 5 which supplies material through a treatment chamber 8 that includes a window 13 that is substantially transparent to microwaves, and a microwave emitter 6 arranged to expose material in the chamber to microwaves via the window in order to cause rapid heating of at least part of the water content of the matrix to form steam, so as to remove at least part of the hydrocarbon content from the matrix; wherein the feeder and chamber are arranged so that the chamber is substantially filled with material matrix. The feeder may be arranged to allow water to drain from the material prior to entering the treatment chamber and may be positioned vertically, inclined or horizontally and comprise a screw conveyor. The transparent window may extend past the chamber (fig 4) and be arranged to be repositioned during operation so that a second region of the window is adjacent the microwave emitter. A method of operation is also disclosed.
