The flat knitting machine has at least a first needle bed in which needles by means of at least one knitting system are arranged and expelled, at least one independently-driven first thread guide and at least one first knitting system, one or more thread guides and one or more knitting systems can be moved parallel to the longitudinal direction of the needle bed. In this method, a. loops of the knitted article are formed with the first knitting systems and the first thread guides, namely, the first knitting system is moved in the direction of knitting while needles are expelled and thread is inserted into the expelled needle, B. subsequently while the needles are not expelled, the the first thread guide moves along the second knitting direction opposite to the knitting direction to a position between the first and second knitting system, and c. the needles are expelled with the second knitting system and thread is inserted into the expelled needles, wherein the second knitting system is moved in the knitting direction.
