[origin: WO2013153044A1] The invention relates to an elevator system (22) comprising a monitoring device (2) for monitoring shaft doors ((4a, 4b, 4c), the elevator system (22) having an elevator car (26) that can be displaced inside a hoistway (24). The elevator system comprises a shaft door contact switch (6a) arranged on one of the shaft doors (4a), and a safety-relevant circuit (8), preferably a safety circuit (8'), which monitors a position of the shaft doors (4a, 4b, 4c) by means of the shaft door contact switch (6a), characterized in that the elevator system (22) additionally comprises a monitoring circuit (10) for monitoring the hoistway (24), which is independent of the safety-relevant circuit (8). The elevator system (22) can be put in a safety mode by means of the monitoring circuit (10) when the shaft door contact switch (6a) is open and the elevator car (26) is not at the height level of the shaft door (4a). The invention also relates to a method for operating said elevator system (22).
