[origin: WO2014107621A2] A lighting element for a solar powered lantern is formed integrally with a bottle closure which can be threaded onto a discarded plastic bottle, such that the light emitting diodes (LEDs) of the lighting element extend into the bottle. The lighting element is powered by a rechargeable battery which is recharged by a photovoltaic panel positioned on the top surface of the bottle closure.
