Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung einer Kurbelwellenposition einer Brennkraftmaschine, wobei ein Drehzahlverlauf der Kurbelwelle über einer Zeit erfasst wird; wobei die Kurbelwellenposition (OT*) durch Abgleich des Drehzahlverlaufs mit einem bekannten Drehzahlverlauf eines Arbeitsspiels der Brennkraftmaschine bestimmt wird; wobei der bekannte Drehzahlverlauf einen für die Kurbelwellenposition charakteristischen Abschnitt aufweist; wobei ein Signal einer mit der Kurbelwelle gekoppelten elektrischen Maschine erfasst wird; wobei ein wenigstens einmal pro Arbeitsspiel auftretender Wert (OT', OT", OT"') des Signals bei der Bestimmung der Kurbelwellenposition berücksichtigt wird; und wobei die Bestimmung der Kurbelwellenposition durch Überlagerung und/oder Kombination der Kurbelwellenposition, wie sie durch Abgleich mit dem Drehzahlverlauf bestimmt wird mit der Kurbelwellenposition, wie sie aus dem Wert (OT', OT", OT"') bestimmt wird, erfolgt.
