[origin: WO2014108297A1] The invention relates to a method for operating an electrostatic particle collector (1, 28, 38, 46), according to which method the particle collector (1, 28, 38, 46) travels across a surface (23) to be freed of particles (24), particles (24) are collected by means of a collecting segment (6, 29, 39, 47, 48) in a particle collection process, and particles are deposited in a particle deposition process in at least one particle catching container (21, 37, 42) arranged in the particle collector (1, 28, 38, 46), and the at least one particle catching container (21, 37, 42) is emptied in a disposal process. For the particle collection process a potential difference is generated between electrodes (7, 8) of an electrode pair arranged in the collecting segment (6, 29, 39, 47, 48), and the absolute value of the potential difference between the electrodes (7, 8) is reduced for the particle deposition process, wherein the sign of the potential difference is changed at least once. The invention further relates to an electrostatic particle collector suitable for the method and a particle collection system.
