[origin: WO2014117925A1] The invention relates to a method for automatically moving a pivotable opening element of a motor vehicle, in particular a tailgate, comprising a drive mechanism for at least automatically opening the element, said device being controllable by a control device, and comprising a device for detecting any obstacle in the movement path of the opening element, said device having at least one ultrasonic sensor. The detection device continuously determines the distance from any obstacle and the control device controls the movement of the opening element in accordance with the detected result. Once a defined minimum distance has been reached, the movement of the opening element is continued for a predefined time period and is only halted when said predefined time period has elapsed.
