[origin: WO2014177552A2] The invention relates to a device for operating at least one electrical consumer (18.1) of a rail vehicle (10), which electrical consumer can be operated by electrical power generated by a braking process of the rail vehicle (10), said device having a control unit (56) for controlling operation of the consumer (18.1) according to at least two operating modes, wherein there is a first operating mode for a first operating phase (BP1) of the consumer (18.1) during a braking phase of the rail vehicle (10), there is a second operating mode for a second operating phase (BP2) of the consumer (18.2) during a travel phase of the rail vehicle (10) which precedes the braking phase and the control unit (56) serves to control the consumer (18.1) for the first and second operating mode in such a way that the operating power of the consumer is less in the second operating mode (L2) than in the first operating mode (LI). In order to provide a device of the type in question for operating an electrical consumer of a rail vehicle, wherein a power generated during the braking process can be used more efficiently, according to the invention the device has a unit (60) which is designed to determine at least one triggering parameter (V) of the second operating phase (BP2), depending on at least one feature (B) of the braking phase.
