[origin: EP2767352A1] The operating method involves cooling a metal strip (1) by a liquid coolant (5), which is supplied to the strip by a supply device (9). The coolant is fed to the supply device through a feed line (10). A valve device (13) is arranged in the feed line. A coolant flow is supplied to the metal strip by the supply device, where per unit of time is adjusted continuously or in multiple stages. An upstream condition detection device (14) is located upstream of the valve device in the feed line and is used to detect an upstream condition (ZV) of coolant upstream of the valve device in the feed line. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program with a machine code; and (2) a controlling device for a cooling device.
