Die Erfindung betrifft eine Vorrichtung und ein Verfahren zum Schneiden von Stapelfasern aus einem Bündel von endlosen Fasersträngen (5), die um ein drehbares Schneidrad (1) zumindest teilweise herumgeleitet werden, wobei das Schneidrad (1) auf seinem Umfang eine Vielzahl von Messern (2) aufweist, die mit einem druck- oder kraftbelasteten Druckelement derart zusammen wirken, dass die Faserstränge (5) zwischen dem Druckelement und den Messern (2) zerschnitten werden, und eine Vorrichtung zum Erkennen des Zustandes der Messer (2) aufweist. Die Erfindung ist dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass über eine Änderung des Abstandes des Druckelementes vom Schneidrad (1) und/oder über eine Änderung des Anpressdruckes einer Druckvorrichtung auf das Druckelement der Zustand der Messer (2) feststellbar ist.
