[origin: WO2014166594A1] The invention relates to a method for the surface treatment of workpieces, in which the workpiece is moved relative to a bulk material of grinding or polishing granulated material. In the method the workpiece is rotated about at least one axis in relation to the granulated material, whereby the workpiece is accelerated to various speeds of rotation in relation to the grinding or polishing granulated bulk material. To ensure a consistently high relative speed of rotation of the workpiece in relation to the granulate particles directly on the workpiece surface, the invention provides for the workpiece, or a container holding the bulk grinding or polishing granulate particles, to be accelerated backwards and forwards in periodic cycles of no more than 5 seconds between a first speed of rotation and a second speed of rotation and/or for rotation under continuous acceleration with continuously varying rotational speeds. The invention relates further to a device suitable for performing a method of this kind such as a drag or immersion finishing machine, which comprises a control device that is configured to act on a rotary drive of the workpiece holder on which the workpieces may be clamped or on the container accommodating the bulk granulated material with rotational speed profiles of the type referred to above during operation.
