Before the blanks (14) are severed, the material web (27) is guided through an embossing device (24) and provided with an embossment (22, 23). The invention is characterised in that, in order to control a change in the length of the material web (27) or of a blank (14) to be severed from the material web, which change in length accompanies the embossment (22, 23), at least one parameter that influences the embossment (22, 23) is varied.
