[origin: WO2015058938A1] The invention relates to a method for protecting a compressor wheel, having blades and a compressor wheel journal and consisting of a light metal, of an exhaust-gas turbocharger against damage, said method having the following steps: melting the surface of the leading edges of the blades by means of a laser beam, supplying a process gas which coalesces with the molten mass, and hardening the surface of the leading edges by cooling the process gas coalesced with the molten mass. The invention also relates to a compressor wheel, in which the leading edges of the blades have a laser-oxidized, hardened surface.
