The aim of the invention is to provide a method and an embossing tool for embossing and cutting into workpieces, in particular workpieces made of steel sheets, such that a warping in the workpiece can be minimized using said method and embossing tool, said method and embossing tool being characterized in that the material of the workpiece (4) is slowed at least in some regions during the cutting and drawing process and the flow of the material is controlled. This is achieved by an embossing tool (1) for carrying out a method of the aforementioned type, comprising a stamp (2) in which a notch (3) for receiving a material of a workpiece (4) is formed and comprising a cutting die (5) which lies opposite the stamp (2) and which has a cutting edge (6) that can cut into the material of the workpiece (4) such that the material is forced into the notch (3) lying opposite the cutting edge (6), said stamp (2) and cutting die (5) being movable relative to each other, wherein slowing means (7) are provided which retain the material at least in some regions.
