[origin: WO2015043094A1] A hair styling appliance is provided, which has a temperature regulation controller to mitigate heat damage to the hair. The appliance includes a pair of heated jaws (10, 11) that can be closed to grip the hair. A power control circuit (20) responds to an activation sensor (22) that senses when the jaws (10, 11) closed, and a temperature sensor (21) that senses the temperature of a heating element (13, 14) on the jaws (10, 11). The power control circuit (20), in response to the first activation output, starts monitoring the rate of change of the heating element (13, 14) temperature, and in response to a rate of decrease above a predetermined level, operates the heating element (13, 14) at a power level lower than a steady state power level.
