[origin: GB2519541A] A ventilation system for cleaning contaminated heated air generated by cooking appliances 22 in a kitchen or food preparation area 20 comprising an inlet 52 for contaminated heated air in the food preparation area 20; a treatment part 200 for cleaning the contaminated heated air, and an outlet for the heated air which is used to heat the building in which the food preparation area is located. The heated air may be used to heat a dining area and there may be means for cooling the air or a fan (210, Fig. 2) for creating a flow from inlet to outlet. The air can be cleaned by filtration, preferably with a series of filters (240, Fig.2), and can also have odours removed from it by activated charcoal (260, Fig.2). A monitoring system 250 may monitor the state of the filters using transducers to measure the pressure drop across the filters, and can control the speed of the fan or send a wireless alert depending on the condition of the filters.
