[origin: WO2015014805A1] The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine (10), which has at least a motor (11) and an exhaust-gas aftertreatment system (13), wherein exhaust gas produced in the motor (11) when fuel is combusted is conducted through the exhaust-gas aftertreatment system (13) for cleaning, wherein an exhaust-gas actual value is determined, which depends on the actual value of a nitrogen dioxide fraction in the exhaust gas upstream of an exhaust-gas aftertreatment component (14) of the exhaust-gas aftertreatment system (13), and wherein at least one operating parameter for the motor (11) is changed in such a way that the actual value of the nitrogen dioxide fraction is brought closer to a corresponding target value of the nitrogen dioxide fraction, such that the particular exhaust-gas aftertreatment component (14) is operated in an optimized manner.
