[origin: WO2015181107A2] An apparatus and a method for determining a level (H) of a fluid surface (O) in a fluid container (1), comprising a first acoustic transducer (10) for transmitting and receiving first acoustic signals (12, 14) towards the fluid surface (O), and a second acoustic transducer (20) for transmitting and receiving second acoustic signals (22, 24); a reference element (30, 40) located at a predefined distance from the second acoustic transducer (20) and mounted in a fluid chamber (5); a first deflecting element (50) mounted in the fluid chamber (5) for deflecting the second acoustic signals (22, 24) at a first predefined angle (W1) towards the fluid surface (O); wherein on the basis of the second acoustic signals (22, 24) a sound velocity within a fluid (F) is determined and on the basis of the first acoustic signals (12, 14), the second acoustic signals (22, 24) and the sound velocity within the fluid (F) the level (H) above a base portion (3) is determined.
