The content output apparatus comprises: a receiving unit configured to receive content; a display unit configured to output a video signal of the content; a speaker unit configured to output an audio signal of the content; a communication unit configured to transmit the audio signal to at least one external speaker; and a control unit configured to be selectively operated with one of a plurality of output modes. The control unit controls the display unit and the speaker unit so as to output a video signal and an audio signal by being synchronized with audio signal output operation of at least one external speaker in a first output mode of a plurality of output modes, and controls the speaker unit so as to output an audio signal by being synchronized with audio signal output operation of at least one external speaker in a second output mode of the output modes. Therefore, an optimum mode to selectively synchronize a video signal and an audio signal of content and an audio signal of an external speaker is automatically set, or can be set by a user, thereby improving ease of a user.
