The method comprises the steps of: - detecting sound emitted by an object (20, 30, 40) in the environment by means of a sensor (1, 2, 3, 4), - evaluating the sensor signal over time, and - recognising a position and/or a relative movement (P) and/or a spatial extent of the object (20, 30, 40) in the environment on the basis of a comparison of a time profile (5) of an intensity variable of the sensor signal with a predefined reference (6).
